The Zebra Foundation for Veterinary Zoological Education was created in 1990 by the British Veterinary Zoological Society (a specialist division of the British Veterinary Association, BVA), through the efforts of Patrick Humphreys (dec.) and Mary Brancker (dec.), with the aim of assisting veterinary students and veterinary surgeons from anywhere in the world to gain (additional) experience in veterinary zoological medicine.
The Zebra Foundation supports veterinary surgeons, registered veterinary nurses and undergraduate veterinary students extending their knowledge of zoological medicine by undertaking elective study projects or zoological research.

Mary Brancker lived and breathed the veterinary profession during her life, and through her legacy will continue to make an impact on the lives of those in the profession who need support.
Mary was one of only a handful of female veterinary surgeons when she qualified in 1937. She founded the Society of Women Veterinary Surgeons and became one of the first women on BVA Council, before becoming the first female president of the association since its foundation in 1881.
Mary was later awarded an OBE for her services as BVA president during the century’s most serious outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease (1967), and a CBE for services to animal health and welfare in 2000.
